Zachary ArcherAustralian Olympian swimmer Stephanie Rice is leading from the front for a noble cause. She is leading to help 5-year-old Zachary Archer who becomes the first Australian to receive cutting-edge cord-blood therapy in a US trial.

Five-year-old schoolboy Zachary Archer, who had suffered a stroke aged four months will travel to North Carolina’s Duke University in September for the ground-breaking treatment.

If successful, the cord-blood therapy will reduce muscle spasticity in Zachary’s right side caused by cerebral palsy and ease epileptic seizures.

Rice has donated a signed Australian tracksuit as the Archer family muster items to be pitched at a fundraiser for Zachary. Organisations such as Queensland Cricket and the Brisbane Lions, along with a variety of local businesses, including Stefan Hair and Westfield, have contributed to the school disco fundraiser at StDympna’s Primary School in Aspley on September 3.

But the medical treatment is expensive, with the Archer family not expecting to see any change from $40,000.
To donate, phone Mr Archer on 0403698866.

25-year-old Brazilian Bruno Souza, a star goalkeeper and captain of Brazil's championship-winning club Flamengo is now under arrest for plotting the murder of his former mistress, a porn actress also rumoured to have had a brief affair with Cristiano Ronaldo- Eliza Samudio.

Bruno Souza met Eliza Samudio at a teammate's party last year and got her pregnant the first night they spent together, police said. But he became enraged when she insisted on keeping the baby.

After the baby was born (now four months old) and Eliza tried to prove Bruno was the father of the child, Bruno hired a former police detective, Luiz Aparecido Santos, to kidnap, beat and murder her, investigators said. One of Souza's cousins, who allegedly took part in the abduction, said in a deposition that Santos committed ''barbaric tortures'' of Samudio while loud music blared to cover her screams, the newspaper Estado de Sao Paulo said. When Samudio begged Santos to stop, saying she couldn't bear it any more, he allegedly replied, "You are not going to bear it any more. You are going to die."

Police said Santos strangled Samudio, cut up her body and fed some of the parts to Rottweiler dogs at the home. The other parts were buried in concrete, they said.

Police have said Samudio is the mother of a 4-month-old boy from a relationship with Souza. The boy is being cared for by Samudio's parents.

In a statement released on Sunday, Phelps says, "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment.

"I'm 23 years old, and despite the successes I have had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner that people have come to expect from me.

A member of the crowd at Hobart's Bellerive Oval was charged with abusing a white South African player during the Australia against South Africa one-day-international.

A Cricket Australia spokesman said a person in the crowd allegedly racially abused Morne Morkel during the Australian innings yesterday morning.

Morkel, 12th man in yesterday's one day international match, did not clearly hear the insult, but a spokesman for the South African team said the remark was "fairly unpleasant".

Cricket Australia said last night it had contacted the South African team and the nation's cricket authorities over the issue.

A policeman at the ground overheard the abuse and interviewed the alleged offender, who was last night charged with racial vilification. The incident, which took the polish off Australia's dramatic five-run victory yesterday, follows a string of racial controversies in cricket.

Antonio PettigrewThe International Olympic Committee stripped gold medals Saturday from the U.S. men's 1,600-meter relay team that competed at the 2000 Olympics in the aftermath of Antonio Pettigrew's admission that he was doping at the time.

The IOC executive board disqualified the entire team, the fourth gold and sixth overall medal stripped from that U.S. track contingent in the past eight months for doping.

Five of Pettigrew's teammates also lose their medals: Michael Johnson and twins Alvin and Calvin Harrison ran in the final; Jerome Young and Angelo Taylor ran in the preliminaries.
